Of Rats and Restaurants
Disney/Pixar's newest phenomenon, Ratatouille, has been the talk of the town since its opening last weekend. The tale of Remy the rat takes us deep into the culinary heart of Paris where we learn such axioms as "Everyone can cook." Everyone, including rodents, that is. The thought of a rat in the kitchen is enough to make anyone squirm, but the incredible animation and food-based plot make this a true joy to watch. But business is business and Disney is now focusing on its second area expertise: merchandising. Among the mass-produced stuffed animals and t-shirts are some uncommon foodie finds. Costco is set to release Ratatouille-brand cheese platters and red and white wines while Sur La Table will carry like-themed cookware and tableware.

And while it's easy to see through Disney's plot to wring out the pocket of movie-goers world-wide, these products are just so darn tempting. I suppose I'm just hoping that for once these gimmicks will turn out to be quality purchases. After all, the producers of the movie were smart enough to use famed chef, Thomas Keller, as a consultant for kitchen accuracy. Whether Disney asserted as much effort in the creation of the gourmet goodies remains to be seen. Hopefully the wines, at least, will be up to the scrutinizing standards of Remy the rat.
